No beauty product can quite replicate that post workout glow like a good sweaty work out can.

There are many health benefits of working up a sweat but lets focus on the beauty benefits for a sec:

  • It helps clear up your skin by opening your pores and releasing toxins, oil and bacteria that can get caught in them and would otherwise cause a breakout!
    HOWEVER it is important to note that you should always wash your face ASAP after a good sweat sesh. Letting the sweat sit on your skin will just send all that oil and gunk back into your pores and cause more breakouts or skin irritations.
  • It releases endorphin’s which help decrease cortisol (the stress hormone) this is important as stress can lead to breakouts and premature aging.
  • It helps your body produce more collagen which is a protein that keeps your skin looking firm and young.
  • It sends oxygenated blood to your face/ skin which keeps your skin glowing for hours after a workout.

Here’s How To Start A Work Out Routine From Scratch

I am big on doing things that make your heart happy. I am also big on doing things that make your heart healthy.

If there is anything I am realizing from watching my friends hit their late 20’s and my parents hit their fifties it is that working out isn’t an option.

Forget the physical aspect of things (even though it is an incredible bonus)-working out will reap you the best benefits internally.

Yes your skin will look great, your abs will start to peak through and you will feel confident in your little black dress but there is so many more benefits.

Want to look younger longer? Work out.

Want to be one of those ninety year old people that can keep up with their grandkids? Work out.

Want to avoid having health issues that hold you back from living life to the fullest? Work out.

It is obvious that working out is a habit so in order to make it a part of your life you need to discover the secret to creating a healthy habit.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

Don’t make ridiculous expectations of yourself.

Haven’t worked out in five years? Don’t force yourself to go to the gym seven days a week. Look yourself in the mirror and say, this week I will work out ONE DAY. Get yourself to wherever your work out spot is for that one day and then get back to your mirror and say, I’m going to work out ONE DAY next week.

Have you ever tried to diet? At the beginning of the day it’s easy to eat a clean breakfast and lunch. Sometimes you can even pull off a healthy dinner but then what happens around 9pm? You’re hungry and you want more. You end up eating everything sweet in your cupboard and feeling terrible about yourself.

The same thing will happen if you force yourself to work out everyday right at the beginning of your Get-Fit-Journey.

You might get yourself to the gym three days in a row but that habit isn’t their yet. After a few days you’ll find yourself avoiding the gym at all costs, making excuses and most importantly not enjoying yourself.

The same applies for any habit that you would like to add into your routine. When you force something that you aren’t used to it has potential to cause the entirely opposite effect.

You want to approach this habit with a sense of self love and respect. You love yourself enough to push your boundaries and tell yourself that it’s time to add this to your life.

You also love yourself enough not to force yourself to do something that you don’t completely love (yet) seven days a week.

Take a look back on the habits in your life that you have created and notice the ones that have stuck. Were they the ones that you forced day in and day out even though you despised them?

Chances are it is the ones that might have started slow but have now become a happy part of your life.

Make your heart happy, inside and out. Tell yourself that seven days from today you will have done something physical that will help you in the long run.

The Many Many Uses For Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar, cider vinegar, or ACV has been used for hundreds of years. It was originally used just for its healing properties, but it can also be incorporated into your everyday beauty and cleaning regime. I know it sounds like I work for an apple cider vinegar corporation, but I swear I don’t! I just love the stuff and if you read on you’ll see why.

Apple Cider Vinegar is made from the liquid of crushed apples which is then fermented until it turns into vinegar. Apple cider vinegar was largely used for its many health benefits and it has even been said that Hippocrates used it to heal his patients.

Some of the health benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar include:
  • Contains vitamins C, A, B1, B2, B6, E and pro-vitamin beta-carotene.
  • It contains minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, copper, iron and silicon.
  • Aids in weight loss by helping control your appetite and sugar cravings. Try having a teaspoon in warm water before each meal.
  • Helps digestion and can ease constipation due to the acid in it which helps break down food that may be hard to digest. It also helps kickstart a sluggish digestive system.
  • It helps balance the body’s alkaline levels. Read my article on why this is important here. It helps prevent the flu and also relieves sinus pressure and fights infections.
  • Anti inflammatory properties which can be very helpful for people with arthritis.
  • Helps to relieve gout, asthma and allergy symptoms.
  • It’s a great detox aid.
  • Increased energy.
  • Better sleep when taken with warm water and honey before bed.
  • Treats and prevents eczema; for this you can drink it, but also having a bath with 2 cups of Apple Cider Vinegar will help reduce eczema.
  • Disinfects wounds and soothes bug bites.
  • Helps to relax sore muscles when used in place of massage oil.
  • It can get rid of warts. Soak a cotton ball in Apple Cider Vinegar, put it on the wart with a band aid, leave overnight and continue until it is gone.

I have mentioned in the bullet points ways you can consume Apple Cider Vinegar but as a general rule try and have 2 teaspoon a day. I like to have 2 teaspoon with lemon juice and hot water every morning.

Another way to get Apple Cider Vinegar into your diet is by adding it to salad dressings. My personal favorite is 1 tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar, juice of half a lemon, 3 teaspoons olive oil and some salt and pepper.

Apple Cider Vinegaris great to use as a cleaning product as it is chemical free but still works as an antibacterial agent.

Some ways you can use it are:
  • Floor cleaner – Just mix 1 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar with water in your mop bucket and clean away.
  • Bathroom and kitchen cleaner – Fill a spray bottle with ½ cup Apple Cider Vinegar and water and use it to remove and prevent mold and any grime build up.
  • Drain Cleaner – Mix ½ cup of salt and ½ cup baking soda together and pour it down the drain, then follow it by 1 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar. These ingredients will work together to break down the blockage. Follow it with water after about 3 hours.
  • Use it to clean your fruit and vegetables by soaking them in the sink filled with water and 1 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar.
So how you can you use Apple Cider Vinegar as an inexpensive beauty product?
  • For shiny dandruff free hair use 1 tablespoon of ACV with 2 cups of water and rinse your hair with it 1-2 times a week.
  • Use it as a toner to balance your skin’s PH levels – soak a cotton ball in 2 teaspoons ACV mixed with 4 teaspoons water. Wipe it over your face and follow it with moisturizer.
  • Mix a few teaspoons with your body moisturiser to give you smooth skin.
  • Use it as an aftershave to soothe the skin. Mix 1 tablespoon ACV with 2 tablespoons water and splash it on the shaved area.
  • To soothe sunburn add 1 cup ACV to your bath to help relieve the pain.
  • Remove stains from your teeth by rubbing it onto the affected tooth, then rinse.
  • To reduce swelling in your hands or feet, massage them with a mixture of ACV and water.
  • To remove toenail fungus soak your toes in 1 cup APV and 1 cup of water every day until it starts to subside.

Yoga is one of my favorite things to do – but it took me a long time to get here. 🙏🏼 A sick symptom of my eating disorder was my “exercise habits,” which were, more specifically, obsessions. I would do it to the point of exhaustion. I would climb on the elliptical with fashion magazines opened to spreads of dangerously thin models for “inspiration,” and wouldn’t get off until I hit my caloric goal — or until I started to see spots, which happened frequently. For so long I thought I had to look a certain way, be a certain size, even just to be at the gym. I looked at myself in the mirror at home and cried. I would put on a sports bra and cry at the fluffy bits hanging out over the sides, tug at the fat on my arms and pull a baggy t-shirt on to cover myself. I would stare at myself in the mirror of the gym and use my reflection as “motivation” to change. And for years I lived like that, flagellating myself on the altar of perfection, and for what? There was nothing wrong with my body then, and there is nothing wrong with my body now. But changing my perception? That was a fucking challenge. Changing the way I thought about exercise. About “fitness.” About HEALTH and wellness and my own body. Because WELLNESS has NOTHING to do with the shape of your body. It doesn’t matter what color you are, or how much you weigh, or where you come from or what your face or body looks like, DESPITE what all those adverts or social media brands tell you. Looking at this photo, I see those things I’ve fought to overcome. I see a girl who, after almost a year of absolutely NO exercise at all, now in the past few months is able to come to her mat in a room full of other people wearing just a sports bra. I see a girl who’s able to close her eyes and move and stretch and feel the strength in her body and her mind, knowing that this mindful movement doesn’t come with numbers or calories. Recognizing her peace. Feeling it. Teff: The New Superfood Grain You Need to Add to Your Diet
