The Spice Girls’ legacy is now being used to fight for women’s rights with this awesome video put together by ‘The Global Goals.’
Here’s what they say the video is all about:
“Using the #WhatIReallyReallyWant hashtag, share a photo of yourself holding up what YOU really, really want for girls and women…
In 2015 world leaders promised to put girls and women first when they signed up to the Sustainable Development Goals to end poverty, fix climate change and tackle inequalities.
Girls and women are disproportionately affected by these challenges and are key to building resilient communities to withstand them.
That’s why we need to ensure World Leaders and the Secretary General of the United Nations listen to the voices of girls and women and put them first in policies and plans.
2016 is our chance to use our collective power and tell world leaders what we really really want for girls and women.
If you make the noise, we’ll get your message to world leaders at the UN in September.
The Global Goals will only ever be achieved if governments, businesses, communities and YOU invest in girls and women.”
Here it is! Don’t have time to read it all? Well, here is just enough variety to satisfy your gossip needs and survive the office banter by keeping you in the loop;
‘Harambe’ The Gorilla – What should have been just another day at the zoo wasn’t the case for anyone attending Cincinnati Zoo in the US earlier this week when a little boy fell into the Gorilla Enclosure Moat. Claims are the boy falls in, a gorilla goes straight to him to find out what had occurred, drags him around in the water, and after an approximate 10 minute agonising wait, zoo officials made the tough decision to shoot the endangered gorilla dead. Was the boy in any real danger? (Likely, in one way or another), was ‘Harambe’ actually protecting the boy? (Who really knows), Should the zoo have tried to tranquilise the gorilla since he is an endangered species? (sounds ideal but most of us aren’t experienced to make that call) Could this story have had a different ending if the zoo didn’t act the way they did? (of course) Should the mother be made to take responsibility for all that has happened? (well?…) These are the burning questions that have people around the world divided but one thing is for sure, we are all grateful to hear that the little boy is now safe and we are incredibly saddened that one of these amazing creatures life has come to an early end.

In a week of controversial ‘naked selfies’, it got me thinking about how real we are when it comes to supporting other woman and embracing each other for everything we are. Now of course, there is no denying it, we live in a world where not everyone gets along. We don’t always like what people have to say and do, and a difference of opinion is what makes the world a far greater and more interesting place.
But how in one breath can we encourage each other to be strong, confident women and then criticise the way in which we choose to go about how we represent that confidence.
If you have been living under a rock this week, lost your phone, computer and ipad, or were abducted by aliens, it’s time to get your tweet on. TV Reality star, entrepreneur and mum of two, Kim Kardashian West posted a nude selfie on social media igniting flames all over Tinseltown and far abroad. Pink, Bete Midler, Sharon Osbourne and Miley (just to name a few) have all chimed in with their views on the matter, but what’s the big deal you may ask? Haven’t we seen it all before? It is hardly the first time we have seen a snippet of kims booty. Well, the issue seems to be all about the timing. Celebrities are all up in arms about her decision to put her naked self out there at a time when the world celebrates International Womens Day.
So is it a case of bad timing or are people being over critical and maybe a little hypercritical of what the day itself is all about?
International Women’s day means something different to everyone. Essentially it celebrates the variety of achievements women gain all over the world and is a reminder to continue to support gender equality. It also brings about a discussion of how we portray women in the media and the influence that women in society have today.
So what message does Kim send by posting this nude? Is it setting women back or embracing the changes we have made thus far? Well, whatever it may be, it certainly has surprised many by the way people have reacted and chosen to go about airing their support or shear horror at her decision to do so.
Whether you’re a fan or not, if the day itself means something different to everyone, and different things empower different women can’t we then accept that someone who is clearly comfortable with their body and all its flaws (because we all have them) and their sexuality, feels liberated when posting a photo of her own body? Surely the real issue exists when we start telling a grown woman in her 30’s what she should and shouldn’t be doing with her body but I’ll leave this one to you.
What makes weird videos go viral?
It’s hard to say exactly what the criteria is to make a video go viral, I think it has to do a lot with luck. But it’s probably either about a child, or evokes some type of strong emotion: like humor (don’t we all love a good laugh?), sadness, or wonder.
Take the “Damn, Daniel” video for example. If you haven’t seen it, what have you been doing? It’s so damn funny! But…it’s hard to say why. Is it really because Daniel is back at it again with the white vans? On the Ellen DeGeneres show, Daniel said that he realized his friend’s (Josh) snapchats were popular when he went to the mall and was asked for about 10-15 pictures. The next day he went to a swim meet and was asked for about 30-40 pictures. When people asked Daniel for his pictures, they also asked him to facetime his friend Josh so that they could hear his voice. So, maybe it was the voice in the video that makes it so funny.
We dare you to watch this video and not laugh!
What about DJ Khaled and his famous snapchats? He often snapchats random things with weird sayings, that for some reason resonate with people. Like, the key to life is cocoa butter. I hardly believe that the key to life is cocoa butter. Cocoa butter can be the key to soft, smooth, nice-smelling skin, but not the key to life. Maybe it’s the far-fetched statements that are funny and just stick with people.
Who are they? Who knows? Regardless it’s still hilarious!
One of the top highlights of the Grammy’s this year was when Taylor Swift won Album of the Year; she beat out Alabama Shakes, Kendrick Lamar, Chris Stapleton, and The Weeknd. But winning the award wasn’t really the highlight, it was her speech.
Kanye (here we go again) had recently released his album “The Life of Pablo” and in that album there is a song called “Famous.” And in that song there is a lyric that goes something like this: “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. Why? I made that b***h famous.” Um, what? So he thinks he made her famous after she won an award and he jumped the stage and stole her moment, insulting her win? I don’t think so.
Taylor, with all her grace, has always been kind and forgiving towards the man who bluntly disrespects her time and again. Not this time.
After Taylor thanked her collaborators and made a special shout-out to her co-executive producer, Max Martin, she gave the most inspiring speech of the night for all the women listening (and to take a stab at Kanye).
“As the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammy’s twice,” (yes, you go girl!), “I want to say to all the young women out there…there are going to be people along the way who are going to try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame, but if you just focus on the work, someday when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and know that it was YOU and the people who love you who put you there….and that will be the best feeling in the world.”
All hail Queen Taylor! I mean, come on, what an inspiring message to all the women around the world! I know, because I’m a woman and have heard many similar stories, that people will try to cut you short for what you’re worth. Don’t let it happen. Follow Taylor’s advice: focus on the work. If you do so, success is inevitable. Always know that you are the queen of your world, you hold the power, and you got yourself wherever you are. And be proud of that for goodness sakes!
Not only has Taylor been wildly successful with her music this year and standing up for herself, she has also been standing up for others. She has been quoted saying that “there’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women” and has acted on that by helping out Kesha with her recent trouble in court.
Kesha reported that she was drugged and raped by her producer Dr. Luke when she was 18 and still a virgin. The case went to court and the judge recently denied Kesha the right to break her contract with the man who raped her. Celebrities are now raising money to help Kesha buy out her contract, Taylor Swift was one of them donating $250,000.
Go ahead Taylor, keep doing your thing. You are certainly loved and appreciated by many.
