We know that lemon is a great multi purpose ingredients when it comes to cooking but did you know it can also be a very useful household tool as well? It can be used for a range of things from an antibacterial agent to hair dye. Read on to find out some of the great uses for lemons.

  1. Detox Every Morning
Mix juice from half a lemon with hot (not boiling) water each morning and drink it before breakfast to set your metabolism up for the day and help keep your PH levels healthy.
  2. Ward off Insects
Bugs hate the smell of lemons so if you have unwanted pests like ants coming into your house you can squeeze lemon juice around the areas of the house that they are getting in. You can also leave some lemon peels around the outside area of your doors and windows to help keep them away.
  3. Remove Odor from the Microwave, Refrigerator or Dishwasher
Drench a few cotton balls in lemon juice then leave it to sit in the fridge, microwave or dishwasher for around 4 hours then throw the cotton buds in the bin. This should help absorb a lot of the odor.
  4. Fruit and Vegetable Wash
Unless you buy organic all fruit and vegetables are sprayed with a lot of nasty chemicals so washing your produce in water with 3 tablespoons of lemon juice will help remove some of the chemicals and any other germs.
  5. Sanatise Your Wooden Kitchen Items
Wooden kitchen tools such as chopping boards and wooden spoons can absorb a lot of the juices from food and can turn a bit of a yucky colour. To sanatise your wooden tools and freshen them up rub them over with half a lemon.
  6. Freshen up Aluminium
Aluminum kitchen tools can also get quite dull and change colour so rubbing half a lemon over them, then buffing them with a cloth will make them look as good as new again.
  7. Remove stains or Odor from the skin
If you’ve been cooking with turmeric and your fingers have turned yellow or if you can’t get the garlic smell out of your hands just wash them in lemon juice, let it sit for about 5 minutes then wash off with soap and warm water.
  8. Make Nice Fluffy Rice
To prevent your rice from turning into a gluey mess add a tablespoon of lemon to the water when it’s boiling then cook your rice as usual.
  9. Lighten Your Hair
Add half a cup of lemon juice to one cup of water and put it in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture through damp hair then sit out in the sun for about an hour before you wash it out. If you do this enough it should lighten your hair quite a lot.
