I love a good book or audio book, especially if it can educate, inspire and make me laugh all at the same time. So I thought I’d share 4 of my favourite books, in case you’re in need of some inspiration or just want something to talk about at your next dinner party.

Yes Please – Amy Poehler (audiobook and novel)

Amy Poehler is one of my heroes, firstly because she is the creator of one of my favourite TV series ‘Parks and Recreation.’ The other reason being that she’s an advocate for so many things I value in life, humour, women supporting each other, creativity, making your passion into a career and being kind to people.
Her audio book is even more hilarious than you’d expect and I had high standards, it’s also full of lots of wisdom.

Why I loved this book: I love that Amy talks about the ups and downs in her career and life. It reaffirmed to me that you do not have to be perfect in order to be a successful role model and do what you love.

Favourite quote: “Great people do things before they’re ready. They do things before they know they can do it. Doing what you’re afraid of, getting out of your comfort zone, taking risks like that- that’s what life is. You might be really good. You might find out something about yourself that’s really special and if you’re not good, who cares? You tried something. Now you know something about yourself”

What I know for sure – Oprah (audiobook and novel)

Just as you’d expect Oprah’s book is so inspiring and full of so much wisdom. You learn a lot about her life and her career. It will encourage you to celebrate the little things in life as well as the big achievements. I’ve listened to the audiobook many times and read the book so I can’t recommend both enough. However, there is something so reassuring about Oprah’s voice, that I would definitely go for the audiobook first.

Why I loved this book: I love that despite everything she went through in life she has managed to create this amazing empire and change and inspire millions of lives. This shows there is no reason we can’t follow in her footsteps.

Favourite quote: “What you believe has more power than what you dream or wish or hope for. You become what you believe.”

Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar – Cheryl Strayed (audiobook and novel)

Cheryl has created this book by putting together questions people have asked her for a newspaper column called ‘Dear Sugar.’ I’m sure anyone who reads this is bound to relate to at least one of the people who write into ‘Sugar.’ Cheryl draws on her own experiences to provide beautiful honest advice that will make you never want to put the book down. Both the audio and written book are great.

Why I loved this book: I wish I could give this book to my 16 year-old self to read (whether or not I would have taken on the advice is another story!) The advice she gives is non judgmental but also upfront and straight to the point which I love.

Favourite quote: “What’s important is that you make the leap. Jump high and hard with intention and heart. Pay no mind to the vision that the commission made up. It’s up to you to make your life. Take what you have and stack it up like a tower of teetering blocks. Build your dream around that.”

The Life and Loves of a He Devil – Graham Norton (Audiobook)

I am a huge fan of Graham Norton, I don’t think there is anyone in the world who can create such a great rapport with celebrities as he does. He also has great comedic timing and never fails to make me laugh. His audio book is no exception. I believe that laughter and humour is one of the most important things in the world, without it the world would be a very grey place. I also think the ability to laugh at yourself is so important and Graham manages to do this all throughout his book, by retelling hilarious and often embarrassing stories from his life. One of the funniest stories involves his dog, in a park and a condom, I’ll leave it at that and let you find out the rest in the audiobook.

Why I loved this book: Graham bares all in this book including his career ups and downs. Despite a lot of setbacks he still moved forward doing what he loved and now he is one of the most successful talk show hosts in the world. This book inspired me to keep moving forward no matter what.

Favourite quote: “Straight men just can’t imagine the bliss of being in a relationship with someone who finds farting as funny as they do.”
